Austin had been on my list for a while, and I finally made it out there for a quick weekend trip. It wasn’t about overplanning or trying to do everything. It was about exploring, capturing the vibe of the city, and seeing what I could create with my camera.
For this trip, I brought along my Canon R6 with three lenses: the 50mm f/1.8, the RF 24–105mm f/4 L, and the RF 14–35mm f/4 L. The R6 paired with the nifty fifty gave me that lightweight, shallow depth-of-field look for portraits and street photography. The 24–105 was my all-around workhorse, perfect for walking through the city when I wanted flexibility without switching lenses. The 14–35 gave me a wide perspective that worked beautifully for capturing Austin’s architecture and open spaces.
What I loved most about carrying this setup was the balance between simplicity and creative options. The 50mm kept me disciplined, forcing me to move and think about composition, while the L-series lenses gave me sharpness, color, and versatility when I wanted to push my shots further. The R6 handled low light incredibly well, which came in handy with Austin’s nightlife and live music spots.
I also put together a short travel video from this trip, which you can check out here: Watch the video.
Austin has its own energy. Live music spilling out of bars, food trucks on every corner, and a mix of modern growth with old-school character. Walking around with just my camera gave me time to reflect on why I travel. Not just to see new places, but to keep creating and documenting moments that matter.
This trip wasn’t about checking off tourist spots. It was about experiencing a city, capturing it in my own way, and building stories I can look back on.
More adventures, photos, and gear reviews coming soon.
